Getting Back On Track: Revamp Your Resolutions

Hiya friends! TGIF!! I was contacted recently by Brittany who was interested in sharing a guest post about maintaining a healthy lifestyle. She did a really great post on re-evaluating our New Years goals and getting back/staying on track.
Check it out!!!
It’s already March! Can you believe it? The snow is melting, the Spring is just around the corner, and soon enough shorts, skirts and bikinis will be in season.  The real question is- how are your New Year’s Resolutions going?  You know, all those diet and fitness resolutions you promised to keep a little while back? Well whether you tried your best and things fell apart, or you gave up on giving up carbs January 2nd, hope isn’t lost.  Only about 8% of Americans that make resolutions actually follow through and complete their initial goals.  Sadly, by this time in the year, many of us have probably forgotten what we vowed to accomplish.  But with swimsuit season staring us in the face, it may be time to grab that list of resolutions that you shoved into a desk drawer.
Figure out why it failed.  I hate to use the “F” word, but it’s important to determine why your resolutions didn’t work out in the first place. People tend to set very lofty goals for themselves and are extremely disappointed when they fail to meet their expectations.  Sit down and try to figure out whether your goals are reasonable.  That isn’t to say that you’ll never achieve your ultimate fitness or weight loss goals, but you may need to rethink your means of attaining them, as well as the amount of time it takes.
Forget about the short term. This step is key.  A huge reason people have issues following through with diet and fitness changes, is that they expect instantaneous results.  Unfortunately, this leads many to make poor dieting choices for the sake of slimming down.  Any fast or program that promises drastic results, with little to no exercise is unhealthy and unrealistic.  These fads have pretty much skewed success rates, often leading to yo-yo dieting, which usually does more harm than good.  Taking your body on and off starvation mode actually causes you to gain more weight.  Your body begins to break down muscle for energy, but once you resume a regular diet, there is less muscle mass to burn calories and your body stores it as fat.  This is a classic example of how short term solutions can lead to more severe health problems in the long run.
Rethink the word “diet”.  I’ve already thrown this word around quite a bit, but I mean it in the most basic definition of the word – “the kinds of food a person habitually eats.”  I’m not talking about talking about trendy, fad “diets” and cleanses.  I’m talking about the types of foods we eat on the day to day.  Dieting should not be a quick fix; it’s a way of living! You should make consistently healthy choices that are beneficial to your overall wellbeing.
Reevaluate Your Options:  Now that we’ve established that crash dieting and short term solutions rarely work, let’s brainstorm.  If you’re dedicated to improving your health, then now is a good time to look at your eating habits and determine where you need to make permanent changes.  Are you eating enough veggies?  How lean is the protein you eat? Think about making substitutions rather than completely cutting things out.   Meal planning is also an excellent way to that you’re maintaining a balanced diet.  Not every meal needs to be elaborate; there are numerous options for quick healthy meals and snacks.  Look for products with substantial fiber and protein to diminish hunger throughout the day.
Use the Buddy System! As I struggled to get on track with a fitness and diet routine, I’ve come to find that it’s exponentially easier when you do it with someone else.   When you are being held accountable by a fitness partner or group, people tend to be more committed.  Sometimes this can be even more rewarding!  Dieting and exercise can feel like much less of a chore when you’re cooking meals with your husband or going for jogs with a close friend.
But of all the tips and tricks I can give, the most important one is to remain positive.  The greatest rewards take time and effort.  So remember, even if the start seems slow and arduous, you can and will reach your goals.

Thank you so much Brittany for the motivation!!! As I read through the post, I realized that it really isn't hard to be healthy and stay healthy. We can all do it; especially when we work together and support each other on our journey to a healthier life!
Enjoy your weekend my bloggie friends,

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pumpkin Protein Bites+ a Plan

Good morning!

I did alot of planning this past weekend when it comes to my upcoming eats and workouts. As I always say, PLANNING = SUCCESS and I'm determined to succeed at my clean eats goals and to get 4 workouts in this week.

Last week was a bit of a bust for us because we've been spending extra time with Derek's dad, who's in the hospital (he's ok - he's just needing a little attention from his doctors) and Dora, our sweet rottie girl, who got spayed last Tuesday. She was a little out of sorts and we wanted to keep a close eye on her as she recovered, plus we thought she deserved a little extra TLC.

In terms of my workouts this week, this is my plan:

Sunday - rest  *food prep day*
Monday - core & zumba
Tuesday - spin & weights (chest & triceps)
Wednesday - rest
Thursday - zumba or the Fitnessista's Booty Burning Walking Workout & weights (back & biceps)
Friday - active rest (long walk with dogs most likely)
Saturday - 90 minutes kundalini yoga

Now when I say I had a food prep day on Sunday, I am not kidding!!! I spent 3 hours planning, shopping and prepping some clean foods for the week. All of my efforts should give us some easy grab 'n go options for busy days this week and I definitely was thankful for my prep work last night when I didn't get home from the gym until 8:15 p.m. I certainly was in no mood to be cooking up a big meal and I loved having healthy, nutritious eats at my fingertips.

I made:

1. 'Cheezy' Broccoli Soup (from the Eat Clean Diet Vegetarian Cookbook)
2. Hard-boiled Eggs (for Derek)
3. Chocolate Peanut Butter Pumpkin Protein Bites
4. Bananarama Protein Pancakes
5. Vegan Mexi-Style Quinoa

My original plan was to make a batch of the Fitnessista's Pumpkin Amazeballs, but I didn't have any natural nut butter at home, so I thought it'd be a tasty twist if I added some Dark Chocolate Dreams Peanut Butter instead. Seriously my friends, these turned out to be Ah-Freakin'-Mazing!!! I was so happy that I remembered my measurements, so that I could share this recipe with because you really, REALLY must try it!

Chocolate Peanut Butter Pumpkin Protein Bites
Makes 7 1" balls

Inspired by the Fitnessista's Pumpkin Amazeballs

3 tbsp chocolate protein powder
2 tbsp unsweetened coconut
1 tbsp oats
2 tbsp Dark Chocolate Dreams peanut butter
1 tbsp maple syrup
2 tbsp pure pumpkin puree
1 tbsp chia seeds
1/2 tsp pumpkin pie spice

In a small food process, pulse the protein powder, coconut & oats until it resembles a fine powder.

Add the remaining ingredients and process until well mixed.

Using your hands, shape into 1" balls.

Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate.

P.S. - as long as you use a vegan protein powder, such as Vega, these are VEGAN baby!!

Two of these make a fantastic pre-workout snack. (So you might as well use that 7th bite as your taste tester, since it's clearly the odd man out!!) These are so handy for nights when I go from work straight to the gym. It gives me the energy to push through my workout without wanting to gnaw off my arm when the hunger pangs start.

What's your fave pre-workout snack??

Have a great day!

Andrea

Thriving Forward

Hi! Happy Monday!!

How was your weekend? Saturday was a good mix of everything I love in a weekend: kundalini yoga in the morning followed by coffee with the girls, groceries, tidying up the house and then chillaxin' with a movie. Derek was out with friends, so I had the house to myself.....it was kinda nice to have a lonely girl night!

On Sunday, I slept in 'til 10 a.m.! It was absolutely blissful!!! I had a family reunion and potluck in the afternoon, so I spent the rest of the morning whipping up my Festive Sweet Potato Salad - I added a chopped apple and it was fantastic - and Tosca Reno's Ooey Gooey Banana Chocolate Chip Bread Pudding. Both of these dishes are healthy AND clean and I got lots of compliments on both. WIN!!! I had just enough salad left to bring with me to work today and this was all the bread pudding I brought home ----- um, it didn't quite make it 'til today ;-)

As you may recall from my post last week, one of my goals was to fully embrace the Eat Clean Diet. So far, I'm doing great and I already notice a difference in how my body feels. My stomach no longer feels bloated and unsettled like it did over the holidays when I was enjoying every sweet treat and cheese tray that was passed my way.

To compliment my clean eating goals, I've also signed up to follow the Thrive Forward program that's been developed by Brendan Brazier (creator of Vega).

This is a FREE online program, personalized to your interests and goals, that will show you how to improve your health through plant-based nutrition. Now I'm a vegetarian, so this is  perfect for me, but this program will still provide a wealth of information for you meat eaters too!! The program includes written e-books, video lessons, email tips, recipes, meal plans and tons of really valuable information to kickstart your journey to a clean eating lifestyle. Now, I feel like I already 'get' the general idea of how to eat clean, but what I really, really love about this program is that it touches on so many other topics such as longevity, sleep, stress, libido, weight, sustainability, etc. When you sign up for the program, you are asked to select three topics most relevant to your interests - I did that - but I will definitely be reading EVERYTHING because there is just so much information about the way food and nutrition affect all aspects of our lives.

If you're interesting in checking out the Thrive Forward program, it's not too late! Click here and sign up today. Let me know what you think - we can support each other as we clean up our diets and become the best we can be!!

New Year, New Goals

Well Happy New Year my friends! How was your holiday season? I hope it was filled with loved ones and fun times and lots of wonderful memories.

Our December was really busy and I was really happy to have some time off of work to rest up and recharge with the ones that I love most. I started back to work yesterday and I have to admit that it's kind of nice to get back into a routine.

While I was off, I found myself thinking about what I wanted to say to you all about my goals for the upcoming year. I don't "do" resolutions because I think the word just sets us up for failure. I prefer to set attainable, realistic goals that I can work towards. They may be easy to achieve or an ongoing work in progress all year long. Resolutions on the other hand usually get ditched by mid-January.

I didn't do a fabulous job at meeting my goals last year. I set a big list up on January 1st and then they got pushed under a bunch of papers in my office never to be seen again.

This year I've decided to break things down a little better in the hopes of setting myself up for success. I do have some BIG goals for the year, but I also want to keep focused by setting daily, weekly and monthly goals, so I can feel like I'm constantly moving forward instead of getting stuck in a rut with no idea where I should be heading.

I'm sure my list of goals is going to change as time passes, but as of today, this is what my goals are lookin' like:

BIG Goals for 2013
*Get involved in a charity - I participate in a few fundraisers, but am not a passionate supporter of any one charity. I really want to get involved with one of the cancer societies, a breakfast club or an animal rescue.

* Re-organize & re-decorate each room in my house - I'm ready for a change.

*Pursue freelance writing opportunities. - As you know, I did two pieces for VegNews.com and I really enjoyed creating material for an online publication that I personally enjoy. I am hoping to make connections with more of my favourite publications this year.

*Make a budget, stick to it and start growing our nest egg into something more substantial.

*Continue working on the blog. - I'd like to work on improving my photography skills this year and maybe, just maybe, get my own unique design layout????

Goals for January
*Fully embrace the Eat Clean Diet. - I have the vegetarian cookbook, I'm ready for the change after a very indulgent holiday and I know the concept. No excuses, I'm going to "JUST DO IT"!

*Workout 4 days per week. - Remember back when I was working out 5, 6 & 7 days per week while following the LiveFit trainer?! Well those days are long gone ---- I didn't work out once over the holidays (unless playing Just Dance 4 with my 5 year old neice counts?!) and I feel like a bit of a lazy ass.

*Start planning and budgeting the reno of our bathroom. - It's the only room in the house that we haven't done anything to and it's just plain nasty.

*Plan 4 date nights per month with Derek. - I need more quality time with my man.

*Clean out my kitchen cupboards. - Seriously, does a family of 2 people really need 18 mugs; especially since one of those people does not drink coffee or tea?! I am going to purge my cupboards, donate my discards to the local Salvation Army and clean my kitchen from top to bottom.

Because I'm a visual person, I love the idea of creating a vision board to keep sight of all of my goals. If you've been a long-time follower here on Vegvacious, you've probably seen me say that I'm going to create a vision board many times. It has yet to happen {womp womp} I saw that the Fitnessista created a virtual vision board on Pinterest and I totally copied her because it's easy and it's clean --- trust me, I can leave glue and sparkles in the strangest of places when I get into a crafy kinda mood. If you'd like to see what my board looks like so far, check it out here.

Do you have any goals or resolutions for 2013?

Have a great day,

Andrea

What I Ate Wednesday

Hi! Happy Wednesday! Have you been working on creating good habits as we  cruise through September? As long as my garden keeps producing lots of veggies, eating healthy meals is pretty easy to do; I mean I have oodles of produce at my fingertips!

Breakfast
I made a new bread on Monday night (link is posted below) and somehow I've managed to sneak a wedge into many of the meals that I've eaten since. That's why I don't make bread very often --- I can't keep out of it!! Usually I eat 80% of a homemade loaf and Derek's lucky if he gets a slice or two. Sometimes, he doesn't even know a loaf was made =)

Anywho, I've been enjoying egg white scrambles with sundried tomatoes and goat cheese with a side of hearty oat bread on the side. Easy and oh so good.

Snackage
I don't know if it's the Halloween candy that's starting to show up EVERYWHERE or what, but I have been craving sweets like nobody's business. Thankfully, we don't have much to tempt me in the house, so I've been eating boatloads of watermelon. Chilled watermelon really is a great snack alternative to help control a sweet tooth like mine.

I've been too lazy to chop the watermelon up, so I've been helping myself to scoops instead of chunks.

Or....when I'm at home, I eat it like this.

Better than eating a bowlful of chips, right?!

Lunch
...was a veggie quesadilla. This is one of my "Go To" meals. It's quick and easy and I just love a cheesy quesadilla loaded with veggies, don't you?!

Dinner
For dinner, I had some homemade veggie noodle soup and homemade hearty oat bread. This exact meal was posted on Courtney's blog on Monday morning and even though I didn't have plans for that to be our dinner, it just kinda happened. I'm always up for some fresh, homemade bread and I was able to tweak the soup recipe to use up all the veggies that were lurking around in the fridge. I'm not usually a soup gal, but this meal was really, REALLY good....and it left me with lots of leftovers for lunches, which is always a WIN with me!

Mmmmm.....healthy, hearty food! It does my body good.

My goals for September aren't just related to food. I've also made a promise to myself, and my friend, Deb, that I will run a 5K with her in late-October. When I found out that we got to wear costumes during the run, I couldn't turn it down, but I need to work hard to get in shape to run it because right now I can only do about 3.5K. Eeek!!

I went for my second training run yesterday and felt pretty great at the end! I was really happy to have minimal knee pain, which is a great improvement to when I tried to start training in the Spring!!

If I can do it, so can YOU!!

Thank you to Jenn for challenging us all to make goals and for encouraging us to keep eating well and loading up on our veggies!  Make sure that you check out Jenn's What I Ate Wednesday page if you'd like to be inspired by other bloggers who are making goals and eating healthy this month.

What goals have you made for yourself this month?

What healthy treat do you turn to when you have a craving for sweets?

Enjoy your day!

12 Goals in 2012

I hope you all had a wonderful New Years Eve ringing in this bright and promising year!!!

We've had a wonderful holiday and today is our last day off before life gets back to normal.

What better time than the beginning of a brand new year to set some new goals for the future. I don't like making resolutions, because I'm one of those people who keep on track in January and then fall off the rails. I prefer using the word GOALS because they are all works in progress that I can move towards over time.

2011 was filled with great moments and some challenging moments and I'm hopeful that 2012 will hold even more wonderful things for Derek & I.

Since we've had some downtime over the past 10 days, I've been reflecting on all the positive things that have impacted our lives over the past year & on what I'd like to accomplish over the next year.

Twelve Goals for 2012

1.   Sponsor a child from a third world country.
2.   Eat a cleaner diet - reduce sugar and caffeine - increase water intake.
3.   Devote more time to developing my blog and connecting with my followers.
4.   Run a 5K Race.
5.   Take Derek on a trip to Walt Disney World he's never been (already booked woot woot!)
6.   Get back to my goal weight.
7.   Take some photography classes to learn how to use my NEW Canon Rebel T3i camera.
8.   Finish getting our house organized and keep it that way!
9.   Do not get caught up in office gossip and maintain a positive attitude at work.
10. Visit more places across Canada.
11.  Finish paying off our student loans.
12.  Set aside more time for date nights with Derek.

Some are easy, some are things I want to do but just never get to and some are to improve myself so that I can be the positive and inspiring person that I aspire to be. So whaddya think? Can I do it?! I KNOW I CAN!

Do you have any goals or aspirations for 2012?

Enjoy the end of your holidays!

Andrea

Where have the last 6 months gone???

To all my Canadian friends, Happy Belated Canada Day!! We had the most gorgeous July 1st ever yesterday ~ it was a perfect day to celebrate the birthday of our glorious country! Dora was the in the party mood and rocked her bandana all day long. She definitely represented all Canadian poochies well.

We started our day off yesterday with an amazing brunch with my grandparents, my BFF Krista and her gorgeous little lady, Mackenzie. I have to say that Derek and I did an awesome job on the food and we had a fabulous spread for everyone to enjoy. Make sure you check back with me on Wednesday because I'll be sharing all of our awesome eats!!

This morning it occurred to me that WE ARE ALREADY INTO JULY!!! Can you believe that we are halfway through 2011?! Only 6 more months until 2012! Yikes - where has the time gone?!

I thought it was the perfect time to take a look back at a list of goals I set for myself on January 1, 2011. This year I wrote myself a genuine list of things I would like to accomplish. I gave up on the old tradition of making resolutions, because like so many others, I usually give up within the first month or two. I like the idea of writing a list of goals instead. It keeps me on track and is something I revisit now and again just to see how I'm doing and to give me some motivation. Some of my goals are just 'to dos' that I can never seem to get to and some are actual goals that I will probably work towards over the course of the coming years. Check out how I'm doing so far:

Andrea's Goals for 2011

1. Clean out my closets and donate my old clothes to the Goodwill.
Done!!  I did this a few weeks back and I have two huge garbage bags of clothes to donate. The funny thing is that my closets are just as full now as before.....I think it's fair to say I have a ridiculous amount of clothes.....

2. Start making some decisions about my future career path and look into different courses.
This one is a work in progress. I have definitely been doing some soul searching on what path I'm destined to follow. I'm still not exactly clear, but I would have to say I have an idea now where I would like to see my life go.

3. Take a cooking class.
I haven't even looked into this yet, but I'm definitely going to do it!

4. Sign up to the gym.
Done!! I made this list of goals on January 1st and I signed up to the local YMCA on January 2nd.

5. Run a 5K Race.
I haven't done this yet, but my friend Angie and I are definitely planning to run a 5K in the Fall. The challenge for me is starting a training program on my own and sticking to it.

6. Sponsor a child.
I have wanted to do this for years and just never done it. I would like to do this as my Christmas Gift this year. I have looked into a couple of different organizations and this will definitely be something that will be done by the year end. I feel in my heart that I was meant to be part of this program and that there is a special child out there for me to help.

7. Save $1,000 for a rainy day.
This doesn't seem like alot of money, but Derek lost his job almost 2 years ago and he just started a new full-time position in his dream job about six weeks ago. When you're used to 2 incomes and then go down to 1 for that amount of time, things can get a little tight. I love the feeling of having a little money set aside that can be used for something fun and spontaneous.

8. Finish decorating our master bedroom.
The room is painted and the bedding has been purchased. All we need is wall decor and a bed skirt, so I'm about 50% done this one!

9. Take yoga.
Not done yet, but I have found a local class I'm planning to sign up for in September.

10. Start a blog.
Done!! I love you guys ~ thanks for reading and supporting and helping to make this blog and my journey so rewarding!!!

11. Plant a garden.
Done!! We have a potted garden on the deck. We have a cute little herb garden, as well as some jalapenos, grape tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes and red Cuban peppers in pots.

So far I've got 4/11 accomplished with many more in the works. Not too shabby if I do say so myself!

Do you make a list of goals and/or resolutions each year? If you do, how are you doing so far?

Now I must say farewell because the sun is shining, the birds are chirping and I think it's time to head outdoors and enjoy yet another beautiful day. Summer has arrived my friends ~ get out there and enjoy!!

Have a great weekend,

Andrea
